Samjin Pharmaceuticals has decided to discontinue the clinical development of 'SA001,' a treatment for Sjogren's syndrome. This decision comes approximately 10 years after the company began serious clinical trials. Samjin Pharmaceuticals announced their plan to cease the development of SA001 and redirect their development efforts towards other new drug projects.

Initially, SA001 was being developed as an oral treatment for dry eye syndrome, a promising candidate since existing treatments were only available as topical applications. Animal studies of SA001 showed that high concentrations of the drug reached the eye's blood vessels, promoting mucus secretion, repairing damaged eyes, reducing inflammation, and increasing tear production.

Despite excellent evaluations for safety and tolerability in a Phase 2 clinical trial for dry eye syndrome that began in late 2017, SA001 failed to achieve statistically significant results in primary efficacy endpoints across all dosage groups. However, studies on animal models of Sjogren's syndrome indicated that SA001 significantly increased tear and saliva production. Based on these findings, Samjin Pharmaceuticals decided to repurpose SA001 from a dry eye treatment to a treatment for Sjogren's syndrome, a condition characterized by severe dry eyes and mouth.

Sjogren's syndrome is a disease with no fully understood cause and no fundamental treatment beyond symptomatic relief, representing a significant unmet medical need. Despite the high hopes for SA001, the Phase 2 clinical trial for Sjogren's syndrome also concluded with insufficient efficacy, leading to the decision to halt its development.

Samjin Pharmaceuticals had been actively researching SA001 since 2013, making it the most advanced candidate in their new drug development pipeline. Following the discontinuation of SA001, the company plans to focus its resources on newly identified drug development projects, including immuno-oncology drugs and treatments for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Samjin Pharmaceuticals intends to continue its strategy of selective investment and focus, terminating projects that do not yield promising results.
